Course Introduction:

Target audience:

This course is designed for senior students with a Mandarin Chinese background and learners who wish to improve their cross-cultural understanding.

This course is offered in partnership with Howard Community College and is a dual-credit program, allowing students to earn college credit upon completion.

Teaching content:

This course comprises three textbooks: *General Cultural Knowledge*, *General Historical Knowledge*, and *General Geographical Knowledge*. Its content mainly covers: ethnic groups and folk customs, traditional virtues and beliefs, ancient science and technology and the Four Great Inventions, Chinese characters and literature, traditional arts and sports, palaces and gardens, handicrafts and cultural relics, cultural exchange and ancient diplomacy, pre-Qin civilization, the Qin and Han unification, the diverse culture of the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Tang Dynasty's prosperity and openness, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms and the Song Dynasty, the Ming and Qing Dynasties, modern and contemporary China, geographical overview, mountains and rivers, four major regions, economy and development, resources and environment, historical cities, natural scenic areas, famous buildings, and the exploration of cultural relics.

Teaching objectives:

The cultural curriculum helps tenth-grade students gain a deeper understanding of Chinese cultural traditions, social values, and multi-ethnic characteristics, recognizing the richness and diversity of culture. Through exploring festivals, etiquette, literature, art, and thought, students gain insight into the historical background and profound significance of cultural phenomena.

The history curriculum systematically traces the development from ancient civilization to modern society, enabling students to gain a deep understanding of the basic characteristics, key events, and far-reaching impacts of important dynasties. Through in-depth analysis of the causes and consequences of historical events, it cultivates students' ability to understand history from multiple perspectives.

The geography course helps students grasp the natural geographical landscape of China, including major landforms, rivers, regions, and resource distribution. Students understand how the geographical environment influences the development of civilization, agricultural production, and regional differences; they also learn to read maps and recognize modern urban development and economic regions.
