Introduction to Jinan Chinese Courses
Jinan Chinese Language and Literature Grade 1
Course Content:
1) Listening, speaking, reading and writing are integrated throughout the course
2) Explain the structure of Chinese characters, the basic knowledge of radicals and guide students to write Chinese characters in the correct stroke order
3) Practice word formation, sentence construction, word expansion and replacement, and briefly introduce sentence structure
4) Read and recite the text
Teaching objectives:
Master nearly 133 new characters (including reading and writing), learn to form words and sentences. Improve students' ability to listen, speak, read and write Chinese and their ability to use Chinese in daily life.
Teaching Method:
According to the age characteristics of students, we combine education with entertainment, give every student the opportunity to participate and communicate, and improve their interest in learning Chinese; we consolidate students' knowledge through teaching methods such as homework and classroom quizzes. In addition to closely combining the content of each lesson with the textbook, teachers also select and explain interesting Chinese customs, Chinese stories, nursery rhymes, riddles and children's Chinese songs.
Listening, speaking, reading and writing will be integrated into every lesson throughout the semester.
Listening: Teachers insist on using Chinese throughout the lectures to practice students' listening skills.
Speaking: Every student participates in the class’s “Talk about it/Describe the picture/Dialogue”; encourage students to actively ask and answer questions in Chinese.
Reading: Students should read aloud new words, texts, and simple Chinese stories.
Writing: Students consolidate the Chinese characters they have learned by completing class exercises and homework.
Jinan Chinese Language and Literature, Grade 2
Adapt to students:Students aged seven and above who have completed the first volume of the "Chinese" textbook:
Jinan Chinese Book 2 has 12 lessons, mainly longer nursery rhymes and short stories, all with phonetic notation. Students learn 146 new characters. After-class exercises mainly include writing (with strokes and stroke order), word recognition, and dialogue. At the same time, different forms of sentence pattern exercises are added, and finally there is reading of the text.
Course Content:
When learning Chinese Pinyin, pay attention to the four tones.
Learn new characters and basic structures (radicals, components, strokes and stroke order) of Chinese Book 2 (12 lessons in total).
Practice expanding and replacing words.
The structure and application of fourteen key sentences.
Teaching objectives:
Be able to add pinyin and tone marks to the new words learned.
Learn about 140 new Chinese characters and master their pronunciation, form and meaning.
Master the fourteen key sentence patterns, improve students' listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities of characters, words and sentences, be able to use some words to make sentences, strive to be able to write simple essays, and improve students' ability to actually use Chinese in daily life.
Teaching Method:
The teacher mainly teaches, according to the characters, phrases, sentences, and essays, and uses one character in multiple ways, from characters to phrases, from phrases to sentences, and from sentences to essays, step by step. In the lecture, the enthusiasm of students should be brought into play, so that students have the opportunity to use their hands, brains, and speak. According to the age characteristics of students and the content of the teaching materials, small programs or nursery rhymes are arranged to increase students' interest in learning Chinese in various forms, achieving the effect of combining education with entertainment.
Jinan Chinese Grade 3
Suitable for students: 8 years old and above, students who have completed the second volume of Chinese:
There are 12 lessons in the three volumes of Jinan Chinese, mainly based on stories, and two ancient poems are added. All texts have phonetic notation. Students learn a total of 159 new characters. After-class exercises mainly include writing (with strokes and strokes), word recognition, sentence pattern exercises, dialogues and reading texts. Starting from the third volume, exercises have added questions and answers to cultivate students' logical thinking.
Teaching content:
- Based on the Chinese textbook, learn Lessons 1 to 12.
- Master the new characters, words, radicals, and key sentences in the text. Be able to read the text fluently and understand it.
- Consolidate and review Chinese Pinyin; consolidate and review new words in Volumes 1 and 2.
- Learn to look up words in a dictionary and master the composition of new words in Book 3.
- Guide students to learn to observe, describe natural scenes, express themselves, and learn to write simple essays.
- Extracurricular supplementary reading materials: children's songs, fairy tales, Chinese culture, festivals, etc.
Teaching objectives:

Teaching Method:
- The teacher mainly lectures and reasonably arranges the amount of words, phrases and sentences in each lesson. Through extensive reading aloud, students can better understand the text.

- The purpose is to combine education with entertainment, and to improve students' enthusiasm through classroom discussions and classroom games.

Jinan Chinese Grade 4
Adapt to students:Students aged 9 and above who have completed Book 3 of Chinese:
There are 12 lessons in the four volumes of Jinan Chinese. The content of the texts is getting wider, including celebrity stories, fairy tales, popular science knowledge, two ancient poems, scenic spots and historical sites, etc. All texts have phonetic notation. Students learn a total of 160 new characters. After-class exercises include writing (with strokes and strokes), word recognition, sentence pattern exercises, dialogues, questions and answers to cultivate and improve students' logical thinking, and finally reading the text.
Course Content:
Students will master approximately 160 new characters and words, 14 key sentence patterns, and improve their Chinese listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as their ability to use Chinese in daily life.
Teaching objectives:
- Be proficient in spelling Chinese characters with the help of Pinyin, and train the ability to independently recognize words, correct pronunciation, and read articles.
- Be proficient in using the stroke and stroke order rules of Chinese characters to write Chinese characters correctly.
- Master the radicals of the Chinese characters you learn.
- Correctly and effectively use the radical method or phonetic sequence method to look up words in the dictionary.
- Distinguish and understand homophones, polyphones, similar characters, and characters with similar pronunciations.
- Continue to accumulate vocabulary and practice word expansion, replacement and application.
- Continue to practice sentence construction and master key sentence patterns and their structures.
- Strengthen oral training and use the learned vocabulary to express complete meaning.
- Read the text correctly, fluently and emotionally; learn to summarize the main ideas of paragraphs and the entire text.
- Learn to write short narrative essays and daily application essays (for example: notes, diaries, etc.).
- Understand China’s culture, history and other related knowledge.
Teaching Method:
The teacher mainly gives lectures, and occasionally arranges students to study, perform and discuss related issues of the text, so that they can better understand the content of the text and expand their knowledge.
Jinan University Chinese Language and Literature Grade 5
Suitable for students aged 10 and above who have completed the fourth volume of the Chinese textbook.
Fifth-grade students already possess basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in elementary Chinese. Starting this year, the focus will shift from recognizing characters to understanding the meaning of words and sentences, learning common Chinese expressions, and writing narrative and practical texts. Through different lessons in each unit, students will further learn about Chinese customs and traditions to enhance their interest in learning, thereby consolidating and improving their existing Chinese proficiency.
The revised edition of "Chinese" textbooks in volumes 1-4 includes modern Chinese pinyin annotations for the main texts and reading texts. Starting from volume 5, only the new characters are annotated with pinyin.
Course Content:
- The main content that students are required to master in the fifth volume of the Chinese textbook.
- Guide students to observe and describe natural scenes, personal experiences, or the process of events. Practice writing 100-200 word narrative essays and common application documents based on the season and textbook content.
- Students are encouraged to read, and Chinese reading materials other than textbooks may be provided as appropriate.
Teaching objectives:
- Maintain your enthusiasm for learning Chinese.
- Develop the ability to read independently with the help of tools.
- Improve oral expression and situational dialogue skills.
- Cultivate an interest in and habit of writing short essays.
Teaching methods:
In the classroom, teachers primarily use inquiry-based teaching and discussions, giving every student time and opportunity to participate. Classroom activities such as reading aloud, sentence construction, situational dialogues, retelling and summarizing, and quizzes help students understand the lesson content. After class, students review and consolidate what they have learned through assignments such as reading, writing, and conversations with family members, while also accumulating new Chinese knowledge.
